MAICO ITALIA – SOLUTIONS FOR ATEX ENVIRONMENTS
Maico Italia has recently renewed and extended its range of ATEX-Certified Fans for potentially explosive environments due to the presence of Hydrogen, Gas And Dust.
Maico Italia’s ATEX fans are designed, manufactured and certified to operate in ATEX-classified areas designated as ZONE 1/2 or ZONE 21/22, with a minimum temperature class of T4.
They can operate in environments containing gases belonging to groups IIA, IIB or IIB+H2, as well as in environments with dust classified as IIIA, IIIB or IIIC. It is important to note that the IIB+H2 gas classification is considered equivalent to the IIC classification when dealing with hydrogen (H2), as specified in CEI EN 60079-10-1 ANNEX H.
Our design process carefully considers the different physical and behavioral properties of the substances present in the air being handled because, although the general directives are common, there are significant differences in the requirements for gas- and dust-hazard zones, with particular attention to hydrogen, which has a wide flammability range and extremely low ignition energy.
Our range is available in the following configurations:
- HYDROGEN: Zone 1 II2G Ex IIB + H2 T4 Gb
- GAS: Zone 1 II2G Ex h IIB T4 Gb
- DUST: Zone 21 II2D Ex h IIIB T 135°C Db
With 21 different product series, we offer specific solutions for every installation requirement, including:
• Wall-mounted and ducted axial fans for simple and direct installation;
• Acid-resistant centrifugal fans in plastic, sheet metal and stainless steel;
• Compact centrifugal and axial roof fans, with ducting options;
• In-line mixed-flow fans;
• Backward-curved and forward-curved blade box fans;
• Backward-curved centrifugal fans.
Finally, the products are certified according to EN 14986 and/or in accordance with the anti-ignition protection concept defined by the IECEx scheme.

ATEX FAN APPLICATION EXAMPLE: CROSS VENTILATION IN BATTERY ROOMS
When battery cells are charged, hydrogen is produced in battery rooms and accumulates beneath the ceiling. With lead-acid batteries, a sulfuric acid mist is also generated near the floor. Both must be extracted.
For this purpose, the air extraction system must be equipped with dedicated exhaust openings at floor and ceiling level; alternatively, the exhaust air can be removed directly using wall-mounted fans. Supply air is introduced at the opposite end of the battery room through a separate ventilation system.
In this case as well, wall-mounted fans represent the simplest solution for introducing outside air.
